About the author

My name is Amity and I was born and raised in the Midwest. (You would have to ask my parents about the name. :-) It was just my parents, 1 older sibling and myself. Like most families out there we had our issues, mostly with poor communication and anger. Throughout the years we have all put in the work and we are now a pretty functioning nuclear family, albeit a bit spread out geographically. We choose to travel together and try to see each other regularly, so things must be going ok. I am beyond blessed to have both my parents and in-laws still alive and married for over 50 years.
I met the man who would become my husband when I was just 15 years old. We dated for a few years in high school before we split up in my senior year. After about 4 years apart we reunited and have been together ever since (22 years as I write this). We have raised 4 children together, 2 boys and 2 girls, all of which are now adults and living largely independently. We have a fantastic mix of step, adopted and biological children. Over the years we have had struggles of every type: physical and mental health issues, financial struggles, shared custody issues, relocations, adoptions, estrangement, job loss… you name it. Been there done that.
I have my Bachelors and Masters degrees in psychology and have had a wide variety of jobs in and around the field for years. After grad school I started in Research and Test development and transitioned to Training and Human Resources as I started raising kids (so I could be home more). When my oldest child wanted out of a gifted program in elementary school my husband and I made the decision to have me start homeschooling. I homeschooled our kids for quite a few years before stepping into a traditional classroom. I mostly taught middle school (feel free to question my sanity now). After burning out on teaching I spent few more years working with kids and families navigating foster care. About a year ago, I stepped away from that to take on a part-time job supporting an online counseling practice while focusing on my writing. I am currently writing a couple of blogs and working on my first full length fiction novel. (Y’all will be among the first to read it.)
